Volkswagen Settles $42 Million Lawsuit over Takata Airbags in U.S.

According to documents filed in the U.S. District Court in Miami, the U.S. Volkswagen unit has reached a settlement of $42 million after 1.35 million vehicles were equipped with Takata air bag inflators that were potentially dangerous. The defect, which prompted the largest automotive recall to date, found that the air bag inflators could rupture and potentially send dangerous metal fragments flying.

The faulty Takata air bags have attributed to at least 19 deaths in the U.S. There have been more than 400 injuries also tied to Takata’s faulty inflators and at least 28 deaths worldwide. This settlement covers rental car and out-of-pocket expenses that the owners had or may possibly face while awaiting car repairs.
