Tesla Must Address Safety Issues with Driver-Assistance Software According to the NTSB

Tesla is preparing for a major upgrade of its driver-assistance software, but the National Transportation Safety Board said the company shouldn’t roll out the tool before addressing what they view as safety deficiencies in the technology. The upgrade called “Full Self-Driving Capability” is expected to help vehicles navigate cities and has been designed mainly for highways. It is does not make cars fully autonomous despite its name. Drivers must keep their hands on the wheel and remain alert.

The NTSB calls the use of the term of the upgrade “misleading and irresponsible” as people pay more attention to marketing than to the warnings found in car manuals or on company websites. Safety advocates are concerned that drivers may overestimate the capabilities of the advanced driver-assistance system. Tesla plans on monitoring the driving patterns of those customers who request the enhanced system.
