What to Do After an Offshore or Maritime Injury?

Time is critical after a serious offshore injury. Here’s what you should and should not do:

1. Report the incident to your supervisor or employer immediately.

2. Do not give any recorded or written statements to company investigators or lawyers without talking to an attorney. These individuals are not neutral and will use your words against you.

3. Identify all parties involved—if a third-party contractor or outside company was involved, make sure your employer documents the involvement of other parties.

4. Preserve evidence—take photos, collect names of witnesses, note vessel names and conditions.

5. Cooperate with authorities like the USCG, but be cautious. These investigations are often used by companies to their advantage and to your detriment.

6. Call an experienced maritime lawyer right away and always before signing any documents or returning to work.

Whether you’re a deckhand, officer, captain, pilot, tankerman, engineer, crane operator, driller, or AB, OS, longshoreman, or other worker, we are here to ensure your rights are protected under maritime law.
