Ruth Rivera focuses her practice on catastrophic personal injury litigation and complex commercial litigation. As a first-generation American and first-generation high school graduate, Ruth graduated from law school with honors from the University of Houston Law Center (number 27 out of 226 in her class). There, she earned membership in the Order of the Barons (a scholastic honor society, offered to students in the top 15% of their entering class) and served as a Contributing Digest Editor of the Journal of Consumer and Commercial Law. She also gained practical experience interning for two plaintiff’s personal injury firms and for the legal department of a Fortune 100 company. She gained courtroom exposure as well, serving as a judicial intern to the Honorable Kyle Carter (in state court) and to the Honorable David Hittner (in federal court).
Ruth was born and raised in Houston, Texas, where she participated in the “Dual Language” program offered by the Spring Branch Independent School District. The program implements an English and Spanish curriculum throughout high school, ensuring participants reach native proficiency in both languages.
After high school, Ruth attended Stephen F. Austin State University (“SFA”) where she graduated with honors. While at SFA, Ruth was a member of Chi Omega, the Pre-Law Society and Driving Jacks –a safe-ride program designated to provide a safe and confidential ride home to intoxicated college students and/or students who are otherwise incapable of getting home safely. She ultimately served as the Vice President of Chi Omega and the Recruitment Director of Driving Jacks.
Following law school, she began her career at a mid-size firm before being recruited to a “Big-Law” firm, where she represented international corporations and insurance companies in cases involving fraud, breach of contract and insurance coverage. In her role as an insurance coverage attorney, she advised insurance companies on their contractual duties and insurance coverage issues, which allowed her to gain insider knowledge about the insurance industry. Consequently, Ruth is equipped with skills from “both sides” of the negotiation table – as she is well versed on the litigation tactics and settlement techniques used by insurance companies and insurance defense firms.
Ruth is licensed to practice in Texas and is admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. She is actively involved in the legal community as a member of the State Bar of Texas, Houston Bar Association, Mexican American Bar Association of Houston, Houston Association of Women Attorneys, the Ladies Alliance of Recent Alumnae (Executive Committee Member – University of Houston Law Center Class of 2018 Representative) and The Latin Women’s Initiative.
In her free time, Ruth enjoys hanging out with her family and her dog, Canelo Rivera.
