With over 35 years of distinguished courtroom experience, E. Lawrence (Larry) Vincent is a seasoned trial and appellate attorney whose practice spans every level of state and federal courts. Larry has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in a wide spectrum of complex legal matters, including commercial litigation, securities and antitrust class actions, mass torts, multidistrict proceedings, and property rights disputes involving patent rights, eminent domain, and inverse condemnation.

Education and Early Career

A native of Port Neches, Texas, Larry earned his B.B.A. with honors in Economics from Baylor University in 1984, where he was a four-year member of the Baylor Debate Team, President of Alpha Kappa Psi, and recognized as one of Baylor’s Outstanding Senior Men. He graduated with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 1987, serving as Managing Editor of the Texas Law Review and being elected to the Order of the Coif. Larry also received the Outstanding Federal Practice and Procedure Note Award and was a member of the Legal Eagles.

After law school, Larry had the privilege of clerking for the Honorable Anthony M. Kennedy, both on the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court.

Professional Experience

Larry began his legal career in Houston in 1987 with Susman, Godfrey & McGowan, later joining the firm’s Dallas office and becoming a partner in 2000. He continued his practice with a boutique litigation firm before joining Burns Charest, LLP in 2016, where he became a partner in 2024. His primary focus remained trial and appellate litigation including motion practice, witness presentation, jury charge, appellate briefing, and the development and challenge of expert witness testimony.

  • Appointed Co-Lead Counsel in In re Upstream Addicks and Barker (Texas) Flood Control Reservoirs, representing thousands of property owners in a landmark inverse condemnation case, resulting in a judgment against the United States and significant compensation awards. The judgment is currently on appeal to the Federal Circuit.
  • Successful representation of plaintiffs in Devillier v. Texas, a high-profile inverse condemnation action against the State of Texas that reached the U.S. Supreme Court, resulting in a favorable ruling and remand for trial.
  • A complete victory in the arbitration of WEH-SLMP Investments, LLC v. Wrangler Energy, LLC, defending against claims and prosecuting counterclaims in an oil and gas exploration dispute, with a successful mandamus action to reverse an adverse trial court judgment and force entry of the arbitration award.
  • Secured successful outcomes in major securities fraud litigation, including Archdiocese of Milwaukee Supporting Fund, Inc. v. Halliburton Co., which resulted in a $100 million class settlement after multiple appeals to the Fifth Circuit and U.S. Supreme Court.
  • Represented landowners and businesses in eminent domain and inverse condemnation actions, including Dallas County v. Crestview Corners Car Wash and Wilbert Family Ltd. P’ship v. DART, obtaining favorable trial and appellate results.
  • Defended clients in complex insurance, ERISA, and patent litigation, including notable victories in Wyndham Int’l, Inc. v. Ace Am. Ins. Co. and Fresnel Techs., Inc. v. Rokonet Industries USA, Inc.
