David James is a seasoned litigator who you can depend on to secure the maximum possible recovery for your case. David is a tenacious and aggressive and you can count on him to fight for you. Before joining Sorrels Law, David was a partner in a large multi-national firm where he defended personal injury matters for corporations and insurance companies. He also prosecuted and defended property damage and commercial litigation matters for insurance companies and corporations.  He is now using that experience to help people who are hurt by the negligence of these companies.

David is well-known in the maritime, transportation, and energy sectors, where he previously represented vessel operators, trucking companies, energy companies, and various transportation intermediaries in all types of litigation.  Before he was a lawyer, David worked his way through school by working for contractors in refineries and spent several years working for a well-known vessel owner and operator on towboats and ships.  David worked his way through law school acting as a tankerman for cargo operations on barges in the Baton Rouge area.  David has real-world experience that is invaluable in his role as a lawyer.

David has extensive experience in both state and federal courts in numerous types of personal injury cases.  For example, David successfully defended several types of personal injury actions, including a chemical exposure case involving more than 20,000 claimants.  Additionally, David has handled personal injury claims arising out of chemical exposures, vessel explosions, a collision between a train and a barge, motor vehicle accidents, and other types of catastrophic injury and death cases.  David has recovered millions for his transportation clients, including multiple seven and eight figure recoveries for his clients in collision, property damage and commercial matters.  This robust experience helps David understand the strategies employed by companies and insurance companies to prevent or minimize the money they have to pay to people injured by their negligence.

David handles cases for injured people involving:

  • Jones Act claims
  • Offshore and platform injuries
  • Maritime wrongful death
  • Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act Claims (LHWCA) third-party claims
  • Refinery, chemical plant and industrial site injuries
  • Big rig and trucking accidents
  • Railroad worker (FELA) claims

David graduated from Texas A&M University at Galveston in 1994 with a degree in Maritime Administration.   After working several years in the marine transportation sector in Louisiana, David obtained his law degree at Louisiana State University in 2001.  David is licensed to practice law in Texas and Louisiana and is admitted to the United States District Courts in Texas and Louisiana.  David has been selected for inclusion The Best Lawyers in America for Admiralty and Maritime Law.

David is a proud native of Port Arthur, Texas, where he grew up in a blue-collar household in the shadow of multiple refineries.  He returned to the Golden Triangle to start his legal career and family after graduating from law school in 2001.  David has been married to Kelly since 2001 and they have three great children together.

David leads the firm’s Beaumont, Texas office and continues to represent clients across the Gulf Coast. When he’s not advocating for his clients, he’s active in local Rotary, youth sports, and community affairs.
